The Psycho-Hunter's Casebook
Published in Paperback by DarkVesper Publishing (22 October, 2002)
Author: Kurt Newton
Average review score:

Distinctly Depraved!
_Psycho-Hunter_ could have been yet another collection of horror poems about psycho killers, but Newton craftily employs a frame narrative that makes it truly original. As its title suggests, _Psycho-Hunter_ is a collection of case studies: we're given a frame narrative that suggests that the collection is a "detective's scrapbook" of writing by four serial killers who not only got away with murder, but also wrote poetry about it before, during, and after committing their atrocities (one poem is "spattered with blood, still fresh from that morning's kill" for example). Each of the four studies attests to their unique modus operandi, quirky personalities, and perverse obsessions. The detective who collects these strange artifacts, John Murdock, is "on the hunt" for these killers, both psychologically and physically. He collects their writing and writes about it. He's gathered it in various ways -- one killer sends him poetry directly in the mail, as a taunt or threat; another actually published some in the small press. These conceits might sound like a stretch, and they are, but it's a fun construct to read and consider. The book readily invites interpretation. And the insights it offers more than make up for the book's artificiality.

You can tell he's done his research about this topic, because the book captures the range of killer "types" straight out of something like _Mindhuter_. There's James Oswald Hicks -- a man suffering from an inferiority complex, who takes it out on his female victims and writes poems which sound like love letters to their corpses. Nathaniel Mark Unger is a small press writer and "process-focused killer" whose over-the-top brutality is matched only by his angry, graphic poems. Then we have Ronald Daniel Otis, who is a subtle killer, evading capture in clever ways. And finally we get Charles Killborn, a guilt-ridden split personality, trapped in a psychic purgatory in which he must assist his alter ego in taking the lives of others.

The brutality of Newton's poetry is beyond the usual fare. This is definitely a post-_Blair Witch Project_, post-_Henry_ collection -- a dark docudrama in gory verse. The book's depravity is both its strength and its weakness, because some readers will be revolted. But Newton's approach generates the same disturbing feeling one gets when reading, say, an actual autopsy manual, so it will definitely make followers of real world killers quite happy. This is the book that fans of John Wayne Gacy and followers of Jeffrey Dahmer have been waiting for -- an artistic vision that captures both the attraction and repulsion we feel toward these madmen. And -- like a mirror -- he holds it up for close examination. Highly recommended for those with strong stomachs. -- from Hellnotes newsletter

Renaissance theatre costume and the sense of the historic past
Published in Unknown Binding by Rapp & Whiting ()
Author: Stella Mary Newton
Average review score:

Fantastic help in preparing our group for the big night.
I picked up a copy of this book whilst in London, on the recommendation of a friend. I had mentioned that I was involved in the staging of "The Boyfriend", and was a first time musical organiser. Matthew and Stella hit all the key points, and give a heads up for sticky issues. I recommend it highly to all those keen producers out there.

The Restless Universe: Understanding X-Ray Astronomy in the Age of Chandra and Newton
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (September, 2002)
Author: Eric M. Schlegel
Average review score:

detailed enough to be interesting
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author did not shy away
from trying to explain the physics in an understandable way
and succeeded. He also very clearly proved his points with
detailed examples. I did think the book was a little disorganized but overall highly recommend this book.

Science & Discovery: Isaac Newton's New Physics, Darwin & Evolution, Einstein's Revolution (All You Want to Know Series)
Published in Audio Cassette by S&S Sound Ideas (August, 1998)
Authors: Edwin Newman and Knowledge Products
Average review score:

Edutainment at it's finest ...
Edwin Newman produces some of the finest edutainment audio series. Bought initially as a bedtime story for my 16 month old son, I looked forward to sharing my passion of physics, math and sciences with him. The more I listened the more I learned myself. I really look forward to more audio edutainment series from Edwin and look forward to learning about new discoveries in physics, math and science and the current day scientists. I hope more scientists will take Edwins lead and share the passion of their work in an audio format. In the future I would love to see audio versions of HyperSpace, Beyond Einstein and Visions by Michio Kaku.

The Scriptorium and Library at Monte Cassino, 1058-1105
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (June, 1999)
Author: Francis Newton
Average review score:

The most important book in paleography of our generation.
This volume ranks with E.K. Rand's Studies in the Script of Tours, or Bernard Bischoff's Sudostdeutsch Schreibschulen (but it is much more readable than the latter), as one of the major paleographical studies of the twentieth century. The product of 35 years of study at Monte Cassino and in libraries throughout Europe and North America, this book presents the first comprehensive study of any medieval writing center to fully integrate paleographical research with the study of medieval libraries, the transmission of texts -classical, patristic, and medieval - with medieval Latin literature, art history and architectural history, medieval liturgy and music, medieval medicine and science. In short, it presents the manuscripts from eleventh- and twelfth-century Monte Cassino in their contemporary context. Detailed analyses of the scribes and scribal practices are illustrated by numerous plates. Every scholar interested in medieval writing and every teacher of Latin paleography or manuscript studies should have this book to hand, and should read it again and again.

Serial Slaughter: What's Behind America's Murder Epidemic
Published in Paperback by Loompanics Unlimited (February, 1992)
Author: Michael Newton
Average review score:

Serial Slaughter - A thought provoking book
Michael Newton has long been a voice in the wilderness and a lighthouse to those of us who study the phenomenon of serial murder. Serial Slaughter not only gives the reader information about the phenomenon, but provokes the reader to think about what is truly behind the making of a serial killer and the resulting slaughter. Newton presents readers with alternatives to simply collecting the bodybags. He points to some very plausible solutions for stopping the creation of the serial killer. This book is a winner. While it is currently out of print, I hope that it will be reprinted and updated soon.

Severe Weather Flying
Published in Paperback by Aviation Supplies & Academics (December, 2002)
Author: Dennis Newton
Average review score:

Written the way all technical books for pilots should be.
Dennis Newton had a goal of writing a book that pilots could understand and use. With over 10 years of line flying under my belt since reading (and re-reading) his book I believe it is the definitive book on the subject of thunderstorm and windshear avoidance for professional pilots. Every professional pilot needs this one in his library.

Six Roads from Newton : Great Discoveries in Physics
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (October, 1996)
Author: Edward Speyer
Average review score:

On Par With Richard Feynman:Clear,Educational,Entertaining
I read this book in 1998 and find myself revisiting it again and again. I love this book.

I keep it along side "Six Easy Pieces" (by Richard Feyman) as one of the two books that have helped me understand the concepts of physics more than any other. Six Roads in fact compliments Six Easy Pieces by picking up where Feynman left off in his book, describing in greater detail "The Theory of Gravitation", complimenting Feynman's explanations of "Quantum Behavior" and moving into explanations of Relativity Theory (which Feyman deals very little with). Makes me wonder if Speyer wasn't consciously drawing from and complimenting Feynman's book.

I can't give any higher recommendation to read this book. It's inspiring, fun to read, fun to reference, it's challenging and includes many graphs and some equations but it doesn't require prior knowledge of scientific jargon or advanced math, provides fundanmental explanations of a wide range of physical theories, and it gives an interesting perspective on the history of scientific thought that has led to those theories. The history of scientific thought, interactions of ideas, and achievements of great thinkers gave the book an engaging story, but ultimately, insight into the thoughts and equations themselves and the fundamental context of where those theories came from is the main feature and tremendous resource of this great science book.

Buy this book! (and maybe I'll get to see more like it)
